FIFTEEN

Mikey leaned forward to receive the warm hug his mammi offered.

“Thank you for coming by. You don’t know how much this meant to us.” When he pulled back, tears glistened in her eyes.

His dawdi embraced him also. “Jah, this gives us hope and something to look forward to.”

“I’m glad Shiloh and I got to meet you.” Mikey stood next to his vehicle. “Your place is amazing.”

“Jah, it is.” Dawdi’s tone didn’t hold much enthusiasm. “But with just your mammi and me, it’s lonely.”

Mikey glanced at Shiloh. “Maybe we can come visit again sometime after we’re married in the Amish church.”

“We’d like that.”

They both slid into Mikey’s car and waved a bittersweet goodbye.

“I like your grandparents,” Shiloh turned to him once they pulled out onto the road.

“Jah, me too. They were a lot different than I expected.”

“I’m glad we stopped by. I think it was a gut visit.”

He released a long sigh. “Jah, it was. I just don’t know what to do about my father.”

“That’s a sad situation. You know it hurt him deeply if he still hasn’t gotten past it after all these years.”

“Jah. I’m pretty sure not even mei mamm knows about it.” He shook his head. “To think I have an older bruder or schweschder in Heaven…”

“It’s kind of sad to think about now, but have you ever pondered Heaven and what a happy place it’s going to be?”

Mikey frowned. “Do you think my bruder or schweschder’s mamm is there? I mean, if she took her own life. That’s like murdering yourself. And then, there was the boppli too.”

“I think it’s possible. I mean, according to what Dat has said, suicide isn’t an automatic going to hell offense. It all depends on if a person knows Jesus or not.”

“Jah, but the Bible says that no murderer has eternal life abiding in them. So, how does that work?”

“Well, it also says that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. If you’re in Christ, that means you’ve believed on Him for salvation. There’s no condemnation because Gott has already washed all your sins away.”

“I know all that, but what if you sin right before you die? You can’t repent of that.”

“So, you think that after you have trusted Jesus, you have to be perfect and sinless? Nee, that’s why we need Jesus in the first place. We can’t be perfect, but He is. That’s why the Bible says those who are in Christ. When you stand before Der Herr at the judgment, you are standing in Christ, which means you are pure, clean, and holy. His grace is covering you. You will have no sin in you because Jesus has taken care of it.”

“I see. I think.” He chuckled.

“The Bible also puts it this way. It says that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption. Something that is sealed is safe and secure and official. That’s what Jesus does for us. And that’s why we can have peace, because we know we are safe in Him.
